Sri Lanka Customs has recently begun releasing Toyota Raize Hybrid 2025 vehicles after categorizing them under the electric vehicle classification. This decision follows a period of uncertainty regarding the classification of hybrid SUVs, particularly the Toyota Raize and Nissan X-Trail, which were previously held at customs due to disputes over their tax and import status.
Background of the Classification Dispute
The Vehicle Importers’ Association of Sri Lanka (VIASL) raised concerns over the initial classification of these vehicles as non-hybrid SUVs, despite Japan Customs recognizing them as hybrids. The misclassification led to significant tax increases, with the Toyota Raize’s duty rising from Rs. 10 million to Rs. 30 million. Importers faced delays in clearing these vehicles, despite submitting documentation confirming their hybrid status.
Resolution and Impact on the Market
Following discussions and a new gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, Sri Lanka Customs has now categorized the Toyota Raize Hybrid under the electric vehicle category, allowing importers to clear them from customs. This reclassification is expected to benefit consumers by making the vehicles more accessible and reducing clearance delays.
The Toyota Raize Hybrid 2025 features a series hybrid system, offering fuel efficiency of 25 km per liter, making it a valuable addition to Sri Lanka’s market. With the new classification, importers anticipate a smoother process for future hybrid vehicle imports.
